Warm homecoming for city's sparrows
Mumbai : More than 200 citizens from Bhandup and surrounding areas have set up artificial sparrow nests near their houses in a pledge to the save the sparrows. The campaign was initiated by the Bhandup-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), Plant & Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) Mumbai last month.
The NGO is providing nests that have been specially designed for sparrows and can be installed outside houses to provide shelter to them.
“We are making these nests out of waste wood to minimise environmental harm,” said Sunish Subramanian, Founder Secretary of PAWS.
Prominent personalities who have supported the campaign by accepting nests include actor Pooja Bhatt and Sambhavna Seth and Member of Parliament Sanjay Patil.
“This is a great initiative as the bird population in Mumbai is reducing at a very fast pace. East Mumbai.
Another avid bird lover and Bhandup resident, Munish Makhija, has formed a bird colony of 25 bird nests at his Kalote farmhouse near Karjat and has installed two artificial nests at his Bhandup house.
