Not so many years ago we see sparrow’s nest under the window sill of many houses and the hopping, swinging and the chipping sounds of this little bird feeding its young once be heard. But this chirping sound has stopped. People used to call it a house bird. Many poets have put down their thoughts in Poetry in praise of this strong willed little bird that goes about building its nest unhindered.
Today, this little bird is in danger and on the verge of extinct as their number is dwindling slowly. The site of this little sparrow has become a rarity in the city due to environmental changes taking place and the huge mobile towers are discouraging the birds to nest. The little bird which once used to make its nest in small holes, pipes, in old wooden roof buildings is trying hard to find a place to make their home.
Most of the cities have turned into a concrete jungle, the bushy and open areas have disappeared and so are the numbers of sparrow drastically reduced. Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) a group of environment activists have taken the unique initiative and have launched a campaign to conserve and prevent the little bird from the threat of extinction.
I earnestly appeal to all citizens to do their bit to help this little chirpy, chirpy, little sparrow to live a little longer. Get this “My Sparrow Home” and install it in your balcony, roof shades or any convenient place to enable it to make its nest.
My hearty congratulations to PAWS-Mumbai for having launched this campaign and wish all the success in their efforts in preventing this little birdie “Sparrow” from extinction.
